Climathon 27 October - Hack Zurich into a green future

How can cities stop climate change? Can YOU develop innovative ideas to make your city greener? The Climathon is a 24-hour climate hackathon taking place simultaneously in more than 200 cities around the world, on October 27. Join the event and get the chance to solve one of the exciting challenges offered by the City of Zürich and Energie 360°: food, energy, e-mobility or climate-change adaptation.

Whether you are a start-up team, professional developer, techie, entrepreneur, student or creative spirit, the Climathon is your chance to hack Zurich into a green future. Experts and coaches will be on-site to bring their support. Food, drinks, a resting area and a buzzing ambiance will bring you energy all through those 24 hours.

Several teams will have the chance to get access to the Climate-KIC Greenhouse (funding and coaching to accelerate your idea) and/or further develop their idea with the support of the City of Zurich and Energie 360°.

That's me on the left.  The others are my three favorite people in the world: My wife of 31 years, Nancy, and our sons Patrick and Chris.  We are from the state of Minnesota in the United States, but moved here to Geneva 3 years ago when Nancy took a job with the International Labour Organization, a branch of the United Nations. Patrick and Chris are college students back in Minnesota, but we manage to visit each other often.

I love living in Geneva, and we take every opportunity to travel and experience as much of the European continent and culture as possible.  In my free time, I enjoy hiking in the mountains (including race-hiking, my new favorite athletic activity), swimming, cooking, wine tasting (which I know nothing about, but like to do anyway) and writing in my blog, SwissSojourner.com.

Most of my professional career has been spent in the area of transportation policy and financing, in both the public and private sectors.  Working for the Minnesota State Department of Transportation, I created and then managed a state grant program designed to support public-private partnerships in which private sector beneficiaries of public transportation infrastructure projects (road and bridge improvements, mostly) support public financing through their own contributions of funds or land donations.  This program continues to flourish today.  I am continuing to work in the public policy arena here in Geneva through my own 1-man consulting business.

I am excited to be volunteering at euforia, because I believe strongly in the cause. And as an American citizen, I feel especially driven to contribute in my own small way to an organization that promotes collaboration to “imagine, design, and implement bold solutions to today’s most pressing social, environmental and economic challenges.”

DAS PROJEKT

Im Herbst 2017 findet erneut ein Mondopoly-Begegnungsspiel im Rahmen des Programms «schule&kultur» statt: Zwei Mittelstufenklassen aus dem Kanton Zürich bereiten in ihrer Gemeinde einen Postenlauf für die andere Klasse vor. Die Posten sollen von Menschen mit unterschiedlichem Hintergrund (z.B. hinsichtlich Herkunft, Religion, Beruf, Lebensstil, sexuelle Ausrichtung etc.) angeboten werden, die den Schüler*innen Einblick in ihr Leben geben.

ALS MITGLIED DES ORGANISATIONSKOMITEES

...arbeitest du in einem Team mit rund 8-10 motivierten Leuten zusammen.
...bereitest du mit den Schüler*innen und Lehrpersonen den Postenlauf vor, unterstützt sie bei der Postensuche und organisierst die Durchführung des Begegnungsspiels an zwei Halbtagen.
...sammelst du Erfahrungen in der Organisation eines (Schul-)Projekts.
...gewinnst du einen neuen Blick auf die Vielfalt unserer Gesellschaft.

Der Aufwand richtet sich nach deinen Möglichkeiten.

Die Arbeit im Organisationskomitee ist ehrenamtlich und wird nicht finanziell entschädigt.

Er bietet Einsatzmöglichkeiten auf der ganzen Welt an, vom zweiwöchigen Kurzzeit- bis zum einjährigen Langzeiteinsatz, Berufspraktikum und Sprachkurs. Mit dem SCI Schweiz entdeckst du die Welt von einer anderen Seite, unterstützt dabei gemeinnützige Projekte durch Freiwilligenarbeit und tauchst in andere Kulturen ein.

Social media & event management for sustainable electronics

Do you use a smartphone, a laptop, a tablet...? If so (...and even if not), you've probably already heard about all sorts of problems that occur along the production chain of these devices: factories in which working conditions are all but inviting, mineral extraction that pollutes the environment, mining that fuels conflict - and the list goes on.

BuyAware is a start up committed to tackle these challenges. They have already developed a system to rate electronic devices, and now they are looking for social media and event management volunteers to spread the word.

Therefore: if social media or event organisation/hosting are your passion, get in touch. You might be the one who can help them and their rating system for sustainable electronics take off!
